The 70th Independence Day is celebrated throughout India on Friday, Aug. 15, in order to commemorate the day the country attained freedom from the British rule in 1947.

Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Narendra Modi will host the National Flag and deliver Independence Day special speech during a grand event that will also have parades and cultural events at Red Fort in New Delhi. The national holiday is observed to pay tribute to the brave hearts who sacrificed their for the country. As part of the celebrations, schools and colleges will organize  flag hoisting as well as cultural events to pay homage to the freedom fighters and legends of the country.

India is a country that is rich in cultures, tradition and religion. You might be a Hindu, Christian or a Muslim, but be proud to call you an Indian. Happy India Independence Day 2016!

"August 15, 2016, marks 70 years of Indian independence. As we as a country go through a rather trying phase — politically, economically and socially, days such as this should come as a reminder of what our ancestors fought for, and gave up so that we could live in a free country."

"Jawahar lal Nehru’s speech signifying India’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ in 1947 — which has even been commemorated in today’s Google doodle — marked the culmination of almost a century of India’s fight for independence; now, we Indians are fighting a different fight — one that is even more challenging because its basis is an ideological one, and it’s among ourselves."

"But sometimes, on days and occasions such as this, a lot is forgotten and the whole nation comes together to celebrate India. On this occasion, and since it is the digital age, we bring to you a collection of patriotic SMS, WhatsApp and Facebook messages and greetings to share with your near and dear ones."
